Village TEACH


Our community engagement program works to strengthen and support existing school structures to identify the root cause of low parental engagement to help school communities develop locally-tailored solutions to engage parents, which leads to increased student presence, in turn driving improved learning outcomes.

The Problem

In government primary schools, 51% of Ugandan parents don’t know the name of their child’s teacher. Our research shows this chronic lack of parental involvement in school ultimately contributes to low student attendance and learning outcomes.

How it works

01

Identify Problem

Program Kick Off

  • Elevate introduces community engagement program at 60+ people community meeting

  • Elevate provides School Management Committee (SMC) training to identify local school problems in order to create their scorecard

Identify & Implement Solutions

Terms 1 and 2

  • SMC tests out locally-tailored solutions to improve scorecard results and collects data on results

  • SMC marks scorecard results and shares results with community and District Education Officer (DEO)

Ensure Sustainability

Term 3

  • Elevate facilitates program through local government to ensure sustainability and scalability

  • Elevate facilitator trains elected community representative to run the engagement again next year

Case Study: Bukasakya Gov. Primary School, Buikwe

P7 students in Bukasakya PS were unable to study for their Primary Leaving Exams due to lack of power to light their homework at night. An elected sub-group of the School Management Committee mobilized parents in the community to design a scorecard and engage their school leaders to reprioritize the budget and buy a solar panel light for the P7 classroom.

As a result parents are more confident in their ability to problem-solve school challenges, have remained more involved in the school and, most importantly, more P7 students received Grade 1 (highest) marks in their exams as they were able to study longer.

The SMC sub-group continues to meet regularly, and Elevate is providing ongoing training to the local government Scorecard Facilitator to further transition ownership and responsibility to the District.
